Freelance Sewing / Craft Tutor Required


Social enterprise, Make Mee Studio, are looking to expand their team of freelance workshop tutors. We offer workshops that are as inclusive, accessible and as environmentally and socially beneficial as possible. We aim to bring people together through creativity and to reconnect people with the process of how clothes are made, making them keep and care about them for longer. 


We teach weekly sewing classes for adults and children, beginner and intermediate courses as well as a whole host of community projects. Successful projects have included those with Youth First Lewisham based youth centre, housing associations Lewisham Homes and Phoenix Community Housing, homeless charity The 999 Club. 


Our work is mainly based in Lewisham but sometimes extends around London. 


We are growing and want to have teachers on board who are interested in long term commitment and growth within the company. 


Job Role

Freelance sewing and craft teacher. 

  • As a freelance teacher, we want someone with extensive sewing, clothes making and craft skills who is comfortable teaching children from the age of 6, beginner to intermediate level adult sewers, as well as vulnerable adults. 

  • We are looking for a teacher who is primarily available for SATURDAY workshops. 2 - 3 Saturdays a month. Usually between 9:30 - 5pm.
  • There may be scope for other opportunities. Eg. after school club and holiday classes for children. As well as day time and evening adult classes.


  • Please let us know your availability with the application and your the number of hours a week you would be interested in doing.

  • We are flexible and are happy to work with you on your availability, in return we hope you can offer us flexibility and reliability too.
  • If you would like to develop your own courses to run in our space we would be more than happy to support you with this endeavour.
  • Perfect for someone working freelance in multiple rolls or someone wanting to work part time.

What does the role involve?

  • Teaching dressmaking and craft projects. 

  • Ensuring you are prepared to teach projects, taking time to understand our processes and instructions. 

  • Contributing as a team member to encourage an efficient workflow and environment.

  • Preparing room before and tidying after classes. 

  • Creating new projects and workshops. (Optional.) 

What we need from you:

  • Knowledge and experience of garment making 

  • Previous experience teaching is preferred but if you have amazing sewing and textile skills and want to explore this as a new avenue we are willing to give you a go!

  • You must be able to uphold a clean & tidy working environment.


  • Full DBS certificate will be required, we can do this for you if do not have one. 

  • You must be able to work in the UK, registered as self-employed and responsible for doing your own tax return. 

  • Be able to commit to specific dates in the future. 

Wage

  • Between £12 & £15 per hour depending on experience. (Starting wage, we want this to grow as the company grows.)

  • Hourly rate covers teaching and preparation time. (Prep time for different workshops will vary and will be clearly outlined before the session.) 

It would be a bonus if you:

  • Have pattern cutting skills
  • Mending skills 
  • Are enthusiastic about sustainability and recycling
  • Have links with community projects in Lewisham or surrounding boroughs
  • Have some photography/editing skills
  • Experience writing funding bids
  • First aid qualification.

There’s lots to do at Make Mee, admin, advertising, funding bids, tidying and preparing projects if you are keen for this kind of thing the role can grow!
